Day 6 5/3/01 Mile 619 Lamesa, TX My day started out like yours...I got up, got dressed, and went to work at 8am. Chances are we weren't dressed similarly, however. I worked with the great guys at Pure Resources, Ronnie and Cory, until about 2pm. Then I checked out of the hotel, amid the same stares I got when I checked in. I grabbed some quick Thai food at my fave restaurant, "The King and I", and hit the road. It was biking was supposed to be like. I whizzed along in a tailwind on a smooth road, easily keeping 17mph. Tumbleweeds blew past, and the area is quite desolate, with the population of oil wells exceeding that of people. Generally, 10 of them were in sight at any given time. Almost every pumpjack was in operation, as opposed to 2 years ago when few were. Late evening is my favorite time on the plains. It gets quiet, still, and sounds travel great distances. The sky takes on a unique character not found in other environs. Even though I spent much of the day working, I'm still on schedule at 100 miles/day. But I am concerned about the time and weather. It's snowing right now in Denver - and that's where I'll be next week. I look to the most distant thing I can see on the horizon, and realize that I have some 200 times farther than that to go.
